Features - Hear it First
Scale the Summit Hear it First by Sean Butze | July 22nd, 2007
For those who like their metal captivatingly progressive, astonishingly technical and completely instrumental, look no further than Scale the Summit. This talented quartet from Houston, Texas is an unbridled force that serves up dose after dose of blazing, intricate prog-metal that will leave your head spinning.
Formed in late 2004 by guitarists Travis LeVrier and Chris Letchford, Scale the Summit set out from the beginning to create a sound that was “widely accessible while not abandoning a technical and melodic foundation.” And a quick listen to the band’s dynamic rhythms, melodic guitar compositions and pummeling percussion will reveal that the group was quite successful in achieving their goal.
Earlier this year, Scale the Summit self-released their first album, Monument. The disc offers eight original tracks that fully reflect the band’s impressive capabilities, making for a listening experience of non-stop aural action. For a first effort, Monument is a surprisingly well-composed and entertaining album that leaves us wondering just how much more this group can possibly improve their style and technique. Still, these young and passionate fellows are clearly just getting started, and will most likely be surprising us for years to come.
