This Specific Dream
Hear it First by Sean Butze | August 29th, 2007

From their home city of Milwaukee, Wisconsin a group of four ambitious musicians by the name of This Specific Dream are emerging from the shadows, prepared to take the instrumental rock scene by the horns. With songs topping 20 minutes and citing influences such as Mogwai and Sunn O))), the band’s initial appearance might lead some critics to exclaim “Oh no, not another pretentious post-rock band!” But let’s not jump to conclusions; careful and open-minded listening will prove for many that This Specific Dream are so much more than just another bandwagon instrumental act.

At the beginning of 2007, This Specific Dream released Ohm, the second album of their career. As many have noted before, the album’s contents reveal a spell-binding, if not dreamlike collection of musical passages that blur the line between intricate composition and playful improvisation. While similarities to various post-rock acts are definitely present, listeners may also be reminded of progressive rock n’ roll artists like Yes and King Crimson during the album’s edgier rhythmic segments.

What’s most impressive about This Specific Dream’s technique is that they don’t seem to be trying to sound like someone else or to please anyone but themselves, yet ironically they are extremely listener-friendly. Their sound is familiar but strikingly original, their songs intriguing yet not overbearing. Anyone with a taste for post or progressive rock styles will surely find something to enjoy in what This Specific Dream have to offer.

Ohm is available for purchase online via TSD’s Official MySpace page. The album will also be released by the Japanese label Zankyo Records in November.
