A Caesar Holiday
Hear it First by Sean Butze | May 9th, 2008

With their debut self-titled album now complete, Indianapolis-based quintet A Caesar Holiday are just gearing up to make their mark on the post/prog-rock scene. Though recorded in late 2006 / early 2007, their album has only recently begun surfacing on the internet and gaining coverage from small press.  While it has been as slow yet gradual start for the band, even the briefest listen to this young ensemble will reveal that they have the potential to become much more than another obscure experimental-indie act.

Just as the most skilled writers are said to be “well-read,” A Caesar Holiday are likewise undoubtedly “well-listened,” capable of delivering clever and original combinations of sounds and techniques that really make their self-titled album stand out.  Melodic guitars and violin paired with interwoven male and female vocal harmonies are delivered with accuracy and a unique sense of passion, breathing life and emotion into each of the album’s tracks.  Guitarist/vocalist Ben Masbaum describes the album as “evident of post rock, experimental, instrumental epic, or orchestral rock that some may call ‘shoegaze’ or ‘drony’…Sort of reminiscent of bands like Slint, Radiohead, Mogwai, Explosions in the Sky, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, so-on and so-forth.”

While many of the genre’s newcomers detest comparisons to the aforementioned musical icons, A Caesar Holiday seem to embrace their similarities while also proudly displaying their own original spin.  Indeed, the greatest aspect of this band is their ability to combine a variety of what some may call old or recycled sounds and create something completely new out of it.  What’s more, by showing off this talent so early in their career, one can take great comfort in the fact that A Caesar Holiday are just warming up.

“We plan on being around for a while,” says Masbaum in discussing the band’s future, “In fact we plan on hashing out a few more tracks DIY- style sometime late this summer to be out hopefully by spring of next year.”

The band has also begun playing shows in their local Indiana scene, though a full-scale tour is not yet on the agenda.

“We haven't had much in the way of touring because of time and money setbacks regarding school, other musical projects and such,” says Masbaum.  “That could all change within the next year, though. Playing out in town and weekend shows in other surrounding cities is something we try to make a regular occasion.  It seems we have been accepted well in the state among listeners and anyone else who may have heard us, so it would be nice to get out and play in foreign areas.”
