War from a Harlots Mouth: Soundtrack to ADD?
Schizophrenia sure does seem to be catching on these days. If ADD had a soundtrack, War From a Harlots Mouth would be a good candidate for contributions. Transmetropolitan is spastic, disjointed, jarring and almost hard to listen at points.
Any band whose myspace has them listed as hardcore/jazz/grindcore is going to pique my interest a little bit. It’s always interesting to see if the band who include jazz in their classification actually know how to play it. War From a Harlots Mouth does indeed do some jazz right in the opening track, "How To Disconnect From Your Social Surrounding In Half an Hour." Does it blend seamlessly with the song? No. It jumps right out and says, “Hey look, we’re playing some jazz.” Is that bad? No, not if that was the reaction that the band was shooting for.
The band does seem to have a sense of humor about some things, as shown by their extra long song titles with somewhat humorous themes. "Fighting Wars With Keyboards" and "If You Want To Blame Us For Something Wrong, Please Abuse This Song!" are two standout titles. It’s just sad to say that the titles were really the only things that stood out even after a few listens. There just weren’t any really good hooks or anything that seemed to separate War From a Harlots Mouth from any other spastic, noisy metal band. I was hoping for something along the lines of early Dillinger Escape plan, but I was just left disappointed. I give these guys credit for trying to push the boundaries of heavy music, but they should just concentrate on writing better songs.
Maybe Transmetropolitan is your cup of tea. I have to say that I would have preferred mine with a little more sugar.
