Crushing two piece monolith
I’ve heard a lot of hype about this band before I ever even got the chance to do this review. That’s not always a good thing. Sometimes my expectations get a little out of control and I expect too much from a recording. Black Cobra doesn’t disappoint right out of the gate.
Feather and Stone opens with the stomping “Five Daggers” and proceeds to try to destroy the listener. Gargantuan riffs played through amps set to destroy roar out of the speakers. I ask myself, “Can they keep this interesting the whole way through the disc?” The next few tracks continue on in much the same manner, attempting to just pummel and crush the listener into submission. I have to admit that it does get a little old halfway through the disc. Fans of High on Fire should love this band. They’re all about relentless, pounding riffs as well. The track “Below the Cusp” has a sound and feel reminiscent of Floor or Dove with the sludgy droning of a down-tuned guitar and a pounding drum pattern. Overall this is a punishing disc and I would recommend it to anyone that likes heavy music period. It's hard to believe that such a heavy band is only made up of two people.
Black Cobra sounds like they would be an amazing live band. Feather and Stone has a very energetic, live feel to it. You can almost feel the energy popping out of the speakers.
