Mathy melodic instrumental soundscapes

Instrumental indie rock seems to be one of the cool things to do these days. Youmetheswitch have the jangly tones of Explosions in the Sky down, and they have the offbeat feel of early Don Caballero on their side as well. What they seem to lack is the ability to take these songs anywhere. Throughout the four songs on the Forest Sleeper 7 inch, I kept waiting for vocals to come in just to break the monotony. However, the guitar interplay is rather interesting throughout the release with the band relying heavily on excellent clean guitar sounds and using distortion as more of an accent instead of a crutch.

The last track, “Mexico City is Sinking” just might be the shining star on this release. This track finds Youmetheswitch making excellent use of dynamics and expanding upon the ideas laid forth in the previous tracks. This might be the band for you if you like bands like Explosions in the Sky, but their songs do tend to drag. The melodies on this release are quite memorable and each play seems to expose a little more in each song. With all that being said, this is a decent release worth checking out if you’re into mathy instrumental rock.
