Crushing debut keeps it simple yet brutal

After years of practicing, recording, and tearing up local underground scenes, the hardcore-sludge-punk quartet from New Jersey once known as Fight Amputation is now finally ready to play with the big boys, returning with a debut album on Translation Loss Records—and a shorter name. Now under the moniker FIGHT AMP, the band’s special brew of punk-flavored, bad-attitude metal is ready to molest your eardrums in all the right ways.

What really makes Hungry For Nothing a great listen is that it is executed with a calculated approach and dynamic flow, serving up addictive riffs and rhythms that have you hooked from the first few seconds of the album all the way ‘til the very end. The album’s modest length at 33 minutes makes for a somewhat short but action-packed experience, which certainly isn’t unusual for this type of music. Above all, Fight Amp have definitely found the sweet spot of simplicity on this release, keeping things raw and relatively simple while still managing to serve up enough face-melting sonic destruction to keep us coming back for more.

Although I wouldn’t say there’s anything fascinatingly outstanding or unique to be found in this release, it’s nonetheless one hell of a fun ride. If you seek aggressive, grunge-sludgey hardcore with a punk-rock edge, Hungry for Nothing is most definitely worth checking out.
