Milwaukee has some angry people
Northless is angry. That much is obvious on the first spin of their self-titled release. From the down-tuned, sludgy opening of “Await the Fires of Man” to the crushing ending of “Sink or Swim,” Northless stomp out killer groove after killer groove. The defining aspect here is that they use a lot of dynamics to really drive the point home. Northless craft dense, angry tunes interspersed with quiet, introspective parts very reminiscent of Pelican or even Explosions in the Sky. The quieter moments are where we find the guitars and bass separating and filling in the sound while the heavy parts have the instruments melded together so that they are almost indistinguishable from one another, much like a sonic sledgehammer. The tunes presented here ebb and flow really well, drawing the listener in. If I had to pick one song, “North Star” would be it. This tune just pummels the listener like a jackhammer.
If you’re into heavy music at all, Northless is a band worth checking out. Let’s just hope that they continue on with what they do.
